Abstract

Inelastic interactions in scintillators produce a low energy tail in the pulse height spectrum. The fractions of pulses in the tails for protons of various energies are used directly to determine the total reaction cross-section as a function of energy. The method applies only to nuclei in scintillators. Results for carbon are presented for 10–68 MeV.
