Abstract

The mortality of tortoises during transport, from the Mediterranean area to the United Kingdom, was assessed from importers' records and pet shop visits. The in-transit mortality rate was very low (<1%) during air transport and in long-distance lorries fitted with controlled environment facilities. In comparison with other species transported around the world for the pet trade, the in-transit mortality of tortoises is very low.
