Abstract

The mortality of tortoises in pet shops during 1982 and 1983 was calculated from records maintained as required under section 6 of the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act 1976. The mean mortality rate in 1982 was 4·2% and 2·8% in 1983. Mortality was related to the number of tortoises delivered and sold as well as to poor conditions in the temporary accommodation used to house tortoises prior to sale. The mortality rate was independent of the time the tortoises spent in the shop before sale.
