Abstract
Giovanni Chellini, known also as Giovanni Samminiati after his native town, was born at San Miniato al Tedesco, probably in 1373.1 In 1401 he was elected to the post of lecturer at the University of Florence. As a doctor, merchant, and moneylender he amassed a fortune, which he invested in properties in San Miniato and Florence. Upon the death of his only remaining son in 1458, Chellini designated as his heir his brother's son, Bartolommeo di Bartolommeo. Chellini died in Florence on February 4, 1462 (s.c.), at the age of ninety and was provisionally buried in Santa Maria del Fiore. His body was later transferred to its final resting place in San Miniato al Tedesco.
