Abstract

DECREASES in thyroidal activity during the period of growth have been observed in the mouse (Hurst and Turner, 1948), the rat (Monroe and Turner, 1946), cattle (Lewis and Ralston, 1953), monkeys (Pickering et al., 1953), and poultry (Biellier and Turner, 1955). Blincoe (1958) reported a decline in relative thyroidal activity in growing calves to 7 months of age even under the influence of a constant temperature of 50°F. Data presented herewith indicate that New Hampshire chicks, hatched June first, showed uniform thyroxine secretion rate (TSR) during the summer and fall. EXPERIMENTALChicks of the two lines of New Hampshires previously selected for high and low thyroxine secretion rate (Stahl and Turner, 1961) were hatched June 1, 1959. They were subjected to the normal temperature variations of the season as soon as they were removed from the heated batteries at 3 weeks of age. They were kept in unheated broiler batteries…
