Abstract
A mathematical model for the three-waveguide nonlinear directional coupler is analyzed. An analytic solution to the equations describing the model is obtained for the case when power is initially launched into the center waveguide. The instability of this center-excite solution is characterized both analytically and numerically. Information is obtained that may be useful for future studies of chaos in the three-guide coupler as well as in the design of practical devices.
