Abstract
(...) Methods for stabilizing sand dunes, using mainly indigenous shrubs have been developed. On irrigated land, belts of trees, mainly pines, poplars and willows, are planted, often in a «forest-net» arrangement, to shelter land for crops. Current research is concentrating on developing ways of managing revegetated areas to maintain them in a healthy state and to reap the benefits of fuel and fodder on a sustainable basis. Meanwhile the «Three Norths» project has moved into its second phase, and, from 1986 to 1996, aims to revegetate another six million ha. (...)
