Abstract

The results from a companion paper are introduced to predict when the contact between two bodies might assume the form of a small contact patch at the peak of a thermal asperity. The final equation, which takes account of heat partitioning between the two bodies as well as wear, serves to estimate when the band contact in seals might draw up into a point or small rectangular patch of contact. Although the topic is not discussed here the same analysis may serve to predict when the band of contact on a gear tooth might transition to a point of contact.
