Abstract

A calculation has been made of the thermal vibration amplitude of carbon atoms in the graphite lattice parallel to the crystallographie c-axis. The lattice dynamics are assumed to be those of the semi-continuum model due to Komatsu and it is further assumed that only vibrations polarised parallel to the crystal c-axis known as “out-of-plane” modes contribute. It is found to be essential to take into account the shear interaction between the layers in order to obtain agreement with experiment.
