Abstract
ABSTRACTThe early stages of emergence of technologies provide unique opportunities to observe and analyze the process of their assimilation into mainstream IT systems. The 3D virtual world (VWs) technology is one such technology. It is emerging as the next platform for developing systems with immersive and dynamic environments. This article investigates the unique aspects of building systems in VWs, and develops the Theory of Organic Emergence of Systems (TOES). Furthermore, the synthesis of TOES with the existing approaches of systems development suggests an integrative framework for systems development. The method of analysis is multiple case studies using Grounded Theory. The article makes multiple contributions. It has significant theoretical and empirical implications in understanding the process of building systems with emerging technologies. Furthermore, the integrative lens provides a unifying framework for different and often divergent views regarding the choice of suitable methods for systems development.
