Abstract

Some features of the uniform strain and of the reduction of area in the tensile test are considered. With examples from b.c.c., f.c.c. and c.p.h. metals, it is shown how the uniform strain reflects the details of their plastic deformation characteristics. For specimens containing a varying volume of void-nucleating inclusions of constant size, the reduction of area is determined by the transverse contraction required to bring the voids to an approximately constant transverse separation.
