Abstract
-The Gupta period is credited as the classic golden age of temple and sculpture art in India. Madhya Pradesh represents a great sanctuary of temples and sculptures of Gupta period. In this period, buildings with durable materials such as dressed stone and brick started. Therefore the period is remarkable for the beginning of temple architecture in India. The tranquility and simplicity of Gupta sculpture made it celebrated and the zenith of evolution was marked by this style of sculpture. These sculptures represented the tainted sensualism of Kushan period and emblematical abstractions thereafter. Fundamental characteristic of Gupta period sculptures lies in its complete Indian style totally committed to the talent and creativity that existed during the time of Gupta dynasty. The Gandhara and Mathura styles represent some sort of foreign influences, however this influence was vanished from the Gupta art of sculpture. Thus with the onset of the Gupta period, India stepped into the classical architectural and sculptural forms branded by restraint combined with a high aesthetic sense and discipline. The technique of art reached to perfection, denotative forms came into being and standards of beauty advanced with fidelity. The pattern of experimentation was castoff resulting into the creation of remarkable images with a magnificent and in-depth comprehension of the artistic standards. Concurrently, boosted sense of aestheticism and excellent finishing resulted in the devising of images, which established iconic milestone for artists in the accompanying ages.
