This chapter aims to map the system of autonomies in the Ottoman Empire - those granted on religious, communal, or on a state basis - in order to better understand Transylvania's place in it. In this respect, it follows a scheme different from that used in earlier literature, notably that of Andreas Birken. Keywords:Christian communities; churches; Muslim states; Ottoman empire; Transylvania
