Abstract

Three phases were identified in the Cr 2O 3UO 2O 2 system between 1200 and 1600°C; namely, Cr 2O 3, U 3O 8, and a mixed oxide of the composition CrUO 4. The mixed-oxide phase has orthorhombic symmetry and the lattice constants: a o = 4·86 8 A ̊ , b o = 5·04 8 A ̊ and c o = 11·78 5 A ̊ . It is probably isostructural with the mineral pucherite which has the composition BiVO 4. CrUO 4 was found to volatilize at elevated temperatures, probably dissociating into UO 3 and CrO 3. The activation energy for this process is 97 kcal/mole.
