Abstract

The monthly variations in the concentrations (ppm) and amounts (kg ha -1 ) of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium were measured during the period November 1972 to October 1973 at nine sites within the Inyanga Mountains of northeast Rhodesia. This is an upland area (1800- 2200 m) composed largely of granite, though dolerite forms the summits, and is predominantly under tropical montane grassland. Average annual maximum and minimum temperatures at Inyanga village (32° 45' E, 18° 14' S) for the period 1951- 61 were 20.3°C and 9.1°C whilst average annual rainfall was 1225 mm.
