Abstract
AbstractThis chapter describes the summer cottage as an important part of Finnish culture. The aim is to show how the divided space between the city and the cottage creates and affects everyday life. For many Finns, life and home are divided into two places, the city and the summer cottage. The cottage is an everyday phenomenon, it holds a strong personal significance to its owner and it is a culturally important part of Finnish life. The summer cottage has also played an important role in forming the Finnish national identity; it is a part of Finnish national mythology.
