Abstract

"The purpose of this essay is to critically assess the general topical organization of recent regional atlases and to elaborate on an attempt to facilitate the evolution of such atlases through the creation of an integrated structural framework as used for the Economic Atlas of Ontario. After tracing in briefest outline the principal concepts leading to the production of regional atlases as known today, a critical appraisal of the outmoded structure of such atlases is given. As a replacement for the late 19th century structural design of most regional atlases, it is suggested that a matrix system based on a semantic algebra permits a more logical arrangement of the contents of thematic or regional atlases. With minor adjustments, the distribution, analysis, synthesis matrix can be readily adapted to the computer-programmed atlases of the future. Meanwhile, the system provides a sound, logically-based integrated structure for regional geographical research and its cartographic representation."
