Abstract

This paper considers UK practise for the strengthening of old cast and wrought iron railway structures using carbon fibre reinforced polymer composite (CFRP). It examines the nature of both metals and presents case studies of strengthened cast iron structures. It explains the potential problem with wrought iron and describes recent research which has shown that subject to certain precautions CFRP can be used to strengthen wrought iron.
