Abstract

Wire - arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is a promising technology for rapid manufacturing of large aluminum alloy complex structures. However, the coarse grain structure and low mechanical properties of deposited aluminum alloy limit its further application. In this study, high-energy ultrasound treatment was used to enhance the mechanical properties of WAAM-processed aluminum alloy ZL114A. Compared with as-deposited samples, significant grain refinement and improved yield strength and tensile strength of up to 177 MPa and 266 MPa, respectively, were achieved after high-energy ultrasound treatment during and after deposition. These findings provide new insights for the better utilization of high-energy ultrasound to enhance the mechanical properties of arc additively manufactured aluminum alloy products.
