Abstract

The paper presents the design a flexible and efficient architecture called the priority based cable network (PBCN) architecture for real-time multimedia transmission with QoS guarantees over multi-channel CATV and ATM networks. As is known, both the upstream and downstream are shared media, and data collision can occur without any flow control. We found that an efficient way to avoid the collision is under the control of the MAC (medium access control) layer protocol. It is this reason why we introduce the enhanced priority based non-blocking ternary tree splitting algorithm, which is based on the IEEE 802.14 working group proposal, to improve the efficiency of contention process and to decrease the chance of collision in the upstream. This paper proposes a connection admission and flow control (CAFC) server including a QoS negotiation component and a priority based flow control (PBFC) module. We also distinguish the data streams with different priorities across different channels by the CAFC server. Finally, we give some simulation results to show the efficient performance of the network architecture which is proposed.
