Abstract

Reports which include values of the elastic modulus of composite materials containing carbon fibres rarely state how the property was measured. Frequently however, it is measured by taking the best straight line fit to the curve, or the secant modulus at a given load or percentage of failure strain. Consideration is not often given to the fact that the modulus may change throughout the strain range to failure which may have an important bearing on any conclusions.
