Abstract

This paper examines the current landscape of ontologies for describing additive manufacturing (AM) technologies and services. Through an extensive search, using both a bottom-up and top-down approach, four accessible AM ontologies were identified. These ontologies were then evaluated according to generally accepted principles and guidelines. It was found, that two of the four ontologies could deal as a starting point for a semantic core of a B2B AM services matchmaking platform. To remedy the existing problems of impracticability, underdevelopment, and lacking linkage to other ontologies, we see a gap in regathering of AM data in a FAIR and sustainable way, and deploying a re-engineered version of a candidate ontology.
