Abstract

The working environment of the NSW Parliamentary Press Gallery journalists is sketched. The demographic background of the Gallery, its mobility, some of its internal structural features, the relation to sources, employers and colleagues are examined. Contrasts between a State and the Canberra Federal Gallery are outlined. Related to the growth of interpretive reporting, the trend is towards greater uncertainty and increased pressures on these journalists.
