Abstract
This article examines the Landtagswahlen of March 2001. The relationship between politics at federal and Land level is analysed empirically and the changing fortunes of the parties are shown to reflect the success or failure of government and opposition, first at the national, then at individual state level in Stuttgart and Mainz. After considering the various party campaigns, the election results are explained with particular reference to research by the Forschungsgruppe Wahlen.
