Abstract

Using an isoperibol solution calorimeter the enthalpy change on the oxidation of tetramethoxydiboron with aqueous hydrogen peroxide to boric acid and methanol has been determined. Hence ΔH f o{(CH 3O) 4B 2, 1, 298.15 K} = −(279.3 ± 0.8) kcal th mol −1. The boron-boron bond energy in tetramethoxydiboron was estimated as 71 kcal th mol −1 and is compared with corresponding data for other diboron compounds.
