Abstract

The stability of AlON powder in the aqueous system was studied during the gel-casting procedure of AlON ceramic. The pH value of AlON slurry, the phase assemblage and the morphology of AlON powder all suggested the excellent stability of untreated AlON powder even in hot water. Finally, highly-transparent AlON ceramic pellets (D = 110 mm and D = 22 mm) were fabricated by a feasible and easy aqueous gel-casting method. The polished AlON ceramics with 3.5 mm thickness possesses the highest inline transmittance above 86% at the wavelength of 2000 nm.
