Abstract
Blair Hamilton and others, in cooperation with the Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education, are compiling a compendium of all student-initiated experimental colleges and free universities in the United States and Canada. The directory will be available later this year; inquiries should be directed to the Union for Research and Experimentation in Higher Education, Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387. The authors of the following brief essay on free universities are members of The New Learning Community, a student group living and working in the Chelsea district of New York City.
