Abstract

ABSTRACT Essentially all published spectroscopic data on the Beta Sco A pair are reexamined in order to establish a definitive set of orbital elements and their uncertainties for this system. Radial-velocity measurements are provided, biases present in the data are discussed, and steps taken to remove these biases are outlined. The assembled data are subjected to least-squares adjustments, and a set of definitive orbital elements is derived. These elements are used to calculate or estimate minimum masses of about 13 solar masses for the A1 component and 11 solar masses for the A2 component, sin i of 0.91, probable component masses of approximately 17 solar masses (A1) and 11 solar masses (A2), and a combined mass of about 28 solar masses. Problems associated with the secondary amplitude determination are briefly considered.
