Abstract

SOME thirty years ago, the well known Parisian specialist in Oriental art, Marcel Bing, whose father was the originator of Art Nouveau, went for the first time on a visit to China. Armed with many introductions from French sinologues to the most prominent Chinese collectors, he was received with all the delicate courtesy inborn in Chinese gentlemen. One day, a collector of Chinese paintings, who, Bing had been told, was the happy owner of a number of the finest paintings in the country, invited him to his home. After preliminary courtesies, Bing approached discreetly the subject of seeing some of his treasures, to which the gentleman consented, after some hesitation. The conversation went on for some time until finally one single picture was brought into the room, removed carefully from its case, unrolled, and hung on a plain wall. Silently Bing began to study the picture, which was a Sung landscape, and slowly the method of the artist and his message began to penetrate his mind.
