Abstract

There is a particular satisfaction in contemplating the paintings of Hobson Pittman. It results from his ability to elevate the little things of a man's environment to a place where their genuine import as factors in the pursuit of happiness are readily comprehended. Evening lamplight, warm carpet under foot, blossoming trees in Spring moonlight, a flock of birds against the sky, a vase of flowers on a gaily checkered tablecloth—these have little social significance but considerable meaning of a personal sort for most people. It is in his conception of materials simple as these that Pittman reveals the essentially poetic quality of his outlook.
