The RDMA had only agreed to this registration on the condition that a vocational training for new doctors would be implemented. This meant that, in fact, a new medical specialty (nursing home medicine) had been established. The training started on September 1, 1989 at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. At this moment, 168 physicians are in training in three universities (Amsterdam, Nijmegen, and Leiden) and in over 200 teaching nursing homes, resulting in 84 new registrations each year. The training program is open to physicians who have finished their basic medical training and for physicians from other specialties.
