Abstract

In 1988, the Ministry of Health and the Royal Dutch Medical Association (RDMA) approved the start of a two years vocational training program for nursing home physicians in 1989. In March 1990, all 700 physicians who had already been practicing in nursing homes for 5 years or more were officially recognized and registered by the RDMA. The RDMA had only agreed to this registration on the condition that a vocational training for new doctors would be implemented. This meant that, in fact, a new medical specialty (nursing home medicine) had been established. The training started on September 1, 1989 at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. At this moment, 168 physicians are in training in three universities (Amsterdam, Nijmegen, and Leiden) and in over 200 teaching nursing homes, resulting in 84 new registrations each year. The training program is open to physicians who have finished their basic medical training and for physicians from other specialties. This paper describes the historical development and content of the training program. The purpose is to contribute to the discussion on the level of professional knowledge and skills of physicians working in nursing homes. Our experience can be seen as an illustration in that direction.
