Abstract

This chapter offers an interpretation of 1 Samuel, using philosophy of language and literary stylistics of that group of Russian theorists that has come to be known as the Bakhtin Circle. It intends to run through beginning of 1 Samuel in an attempt to give a feel for what literary voice sounds like. The chapter retraces course of author's own reading to lay bare in a confessional mode some of assumptions and points of view that constitute his approach to text. The story of birth and consecration of Samuel is a type-scene of annunciation. Clearly, birth story signals central role Samuel will play as kingmaker in Israel. The point of view represented by a single utterance of a single voice resonates with words of others either in agreement or in opposition, with either emotive similarity or contrast. Keywords: 1 Samuel; Israel; philosophy of language; Russian theorists
