Abstract

The South African Plant-Parasitic Nematode Survey: A snap shot of the last 23 years. The Nematology Unit of the Plant Protection Research Institute founded the South African Plant-Parasitic Nematode Survey (SAPPNS) in 1987. The aim was to make a comprehensive assessment of the nematode biodiversity resources of South Africa. The main objectives of the SAPPNS were to make an inventory of all the plant-parasitic nematodes of South Africa, to study the biogeography of these plant-parasitic nematodes, to establish an electronic database of these plant-parasitic nematodes at the NCN and to compile distribution maps of each economically important plant-parasitic nematode species.
