Abstract

ABSTRACT The solvent extraction of europium(II) from chloride media by solutions of some monobasic orcanoonosphorus and carboxvlic acids in xylene was investigated. Corresponding studies of europium(III) and of the alkaline-earth metals that most resemble europium(II) in terms of ionic radius,, calcium and strontium, were also.carried out. It was concluded from slope-analysis treatment of the metal-distribution data that the organophosphorus acids (H2A2, dimer) extract europium(II), calcium and strontium in the form of complexes of stoichiometry M(HA2) 2(HA) 2, and europium(m) as complexes of the type Eu(HA2) 3. Anomalous results were obtained with the compound di-n-octylphosphinic acid, however. For the different classes of organophosphorus acids used, the extraction of europium(II) was found to occur in a pH range 2.5 to 4.0 units higher than that of europium(III), the separation increasing in the order: phosphoric < phosphonic < phosphinic acids. The extraction of europium(II) was similar to that of st...
