Abstract
ABSTRACT This paper attempts to broaden the use of genograms by adapting solution-focused strategies to better understand clients and their families. This view fosters competency, presumes families have solutions, focuses on strengths, and depathologizes client-family history. Utilizing a solution-focused genogram creates a context in which families are able to focus on coping more effectively and based on this, how their future might be different. Practical clinical suggestions incorporating solution-oriented techniques that reframe behaviors, relationships, and normalize family perceptions are delineated.
