Abstract

Previous methods of studying the electrical activity of PVdF have been confused by the existence of both reversible (pyroelectric) and irreversible (relaxation) effects. A new technique is described which enables the two individual effects to be measured simultaneously by applying a thermal excitation which consists of a constant heating rate combined with a small sinusoidal temperature fluctuation. Some preliminary measurements of commercially available 25 mu m PVdF films demonstrate the consistency of the results with previous work. In addition to this, further insight into the nature of the electrical activity of PVdF is given. Of particular note is the observation that pyroelectricity can be enhanced by about 10% following heat treatment of the film at 60 degrees C.
