Abstract

The argon induced red shift of the emission band sequences Δν = -1, 0, 1, and 2 of CN, B 2Σ- A 2Π, which occur at 3590.4, 3883.4 4216.1 Å respectively, was observed. The temperature was held constant at 2810 ±50°K while relative densities of argon from 22.5 to 86 were obtained by a ballistic compressor. Plots of the red shift as a function of relative density of argon are not linear. The average shifts are -0.035, -0.065, -0.064 and -0.057 cm -1/r.d. for the above mentioned sequences, respectively. Also, the Δ v = -1 sequence of the A 3Π g - X 3Π u transition of C 2 was measured and showed a non-linear blue shift of 0.02 cm -1/r.d. approxima tely.
