Abstract
The training, motivation and social promotion of that half of the total forest labour force which is employed by the Forestry Commission is the main concern of this paper. The needs of the private sector of the industry are met by training schemes administered through the Forestry Training Council and the FTITB. Training, testing and certification of skills: Use of trainability tests assists forest managers in selecting the right man for the job and provides the new recruit with real insight into what the job entails. Formal courses are given on-the-job by peripathetic instructors and at centres where more specialization is required for the larger sophisticated harvesting machines. Training courses in modular format, with skills tests being applied before the trainee can proceed to the next stage are described in detailed instructor manuals.
