Abstract

The indispensable basis of science is true singular propositions (facts, objective data). However, without the intellectual framework of theories, facts would be purely cumulative and of little meaning. The full power of science becomes obvious only in the construction of theories and in the formulation of general propositions or laws. Scientific research is concerned with the improvement of singular as well as of general propositions. We have already described the significance of objective data and the close connection between inductive and deductive steps in the construction and defense of theories (Fig. 1). We now consider the term “law” and its meaning.
