Abstract

The intensity and the polarization of light scattered by elastic waves in cubic crystals are calculated for all analytic scattering geometries. The calculations are applicable both to Brillouin spectra and to first-order Raman spectra. It is emphasized that both intensity and polarization depend on whether or not the crystal is centro-symmetric. Studying the polarization of the spectrum allows a centre of symmetry to be determined unambiguously.
