Abstract

Systems formed by semi-infinite cubic crystals with cubic overlayers, having (001) free surfaces and interfaces, are considered. We study the elastic surface waves of these systems, by using a Green function method, for arbitrary thickness and direction of propagation. Considerable simplification in the solution of the problem can be achieved for small thickness of the overlayer. In this limit we have obtained for the first time the dispersion relation of Rayleigh and Love waves in closed form, to first order in hK ( h  thickness, K  parallel wavevector), for the symmetry directions [100] and [110]. We have studied several systems with η>1 and η < 1 (η= 2C 44 C 11 −C 12) . In this way the influence of the overlayer not only on the generalized Rayleigh waves (GRW) but also on the pseudo-surface waves (PSW) for several directions of propagation and different thickness of the overlayer, has been obtained.
