Abstract
Members will know from previous issues of Physics Bulletin (November and December 1970) that Her Majesty The Queen has approved the grant of a Royal Charter to The Institute of Physics and The Physical Society, under the title of 'The Institute of Physics'. This is an important landmark for physics and physicists in this country and it seems appropriate, immediately before we cease to operate as a statutory body registered under the Companies Act 1948 and start life as a Chartered Institute, that members should be informed of the significance of the event.
