Abstract

The recreation sector is continually challenged to make good decisions related to program delivery, facility development, and resource allocation. Planning is a tool that can set in motion better decision making. For many recreation professionals, some aspect of planning, whether that be developing, implementing, or evaluating a plan, fall within their role. For this reason, planning represents a set of skills students graduating from a recreation and leisure department require. Undergraduate students at Brock University were involved in a community service-learning project with a municipal recreation agency related to a neighborhood park expansion. To structure the course and ensure alignment between student learning goals and community agency goals, an eight-step planning process put forth by Harper (2009) was used. Desired outcomes for student learners included academic, societal/civic, and personal outcomes. The recreation agency, members of the community, and the university also benefited from this project.
