Abstract
THE SIGNIFICANCE given to history by the Chinese people from the begin ning until now is one of their most striking characteristics. The Chinese have not only endured; they have consciously endured, and this concept of continuity demanded the mechanics of historiography, with the interpretation of history to give it concrete expression. Coupled with this deep-seated belief in the importance of the record of men and events has been a passion for the Chinese written characters-a passion almost religious in its nature. Whether a Chinese could read or not, he held the characters to be sacred; and even when modern newspapers came to be used as wrapping paper, the common people as well as the scholars looked askance.
