Abstract

When examining China’s rapid economic growth and social development over last two decades, credit must be paid to the crucial part played by the Chinese people. With great courage and wisdom, those people concerned with the China’s destiny and future never stopped in their observation and consideration of China’s situation, and tried their best, often at great risk to themselves, to offer criticisms and suggestions. It was their valuable efforts that finally enabled China to launch the reform and opening up drive by the end of 1978. In exploring the associated events we shall consider three groups of people — intellectuals, officers and common people — each of which used different methods to give impetus to and played different roles in China’s development.
