Abstract

This author concentrates on the Family Service Center (FSC) program component of Head Start services. The author states that the FSCs' primary purpose is to provide or coordinate a set of support services to help Head Start families achieve greater self sufficiency and success in three key areas: adult literacy, substance abuse education and counseling, and career development and employment. Throughout the paper, the author makes references to the effects that the FSCs have had on the Southern Ute in Ignacio, Colorado, and relates it to some of the current views on the redirection of Head Start. The author notes that although programs like FSC that focus on the needs of the entire family seem to be of critical importance, there is little information or discussion of their expansion expressed in recent literature.
