Abstract

Fertility can be viewed from many perspectives. Both unwanted fertility and infertility pose problems for individuals and society. This chapter reviews our understanding of the causes and treatments of infertility and focuses on psychogenic causes of infertility. While we acknowledge many stakeholders, we will primarily consider the perspective of the individual and the couple who are seeking the least technology necessary to achieve their fertility goals. This chapter focuses on stress-induced reproductive compromise in women. We will explicate the mechanisms linking stress and reproductive function and review the use of nonpharmacological approaches, particularly cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), to ameliorate stress and restore fertility.
