Abstract
Summary The present study examined the counterconditioning thesis in systematic desensitization. Fifteen snake phobic S s were exposed to either (a) Desensitization plus relaxation, (b) Desensitization plus muscle tension or, (c) no treatment. Both treatment groups improved significantly more than the control group on the behavioral avoidance test and on most of the self-rating measures. The necessity of relaxation is discussed.
