Abstract

This review is focused on the role of noradrenalin and its receptors in the pathogenesis of primary headaches, in particular, migraine headaches. The data are summarized on the involvement of different adrenoreceptors in the regulation of tone of cerebral vessels and modulation of transmission of nociceptive information in the trigeminovascular system and at the supraspinal level of the CNS. We discuss the pharmacodynamics of several adrenergic drugs that are used for prophylactic treatment of migraine headaches.
